Orbiter — Win9x, NT4, Win2K, WinME, XP
ORBITER is a realistic space simulation using proper physics for the modelling of planetary motion, gravitational fields, free space and atmospheric flight etc. As such, it is more challenging to master than an arcade game – you should at least have some basic idea about mechanics and planetary motion to get the most from it.

Liero — DOS
Liero is an excellent 2D Worms clone. You can combat against the computer or a friend using 5 out of the 40 weapons available. While Liero doesn’t have network or internet play option, it still stands as the best Worms clone out there.

Netrek — Win9x, Win3.x, OS/2, DOS, Sun 3, Sun 4, Solaris, FreeBSD, HP 700, SGI, Dec Ultrix, Digital Unix, MkLinux, Dec Alpha, Linux, RS 6000, AIX, Dynix/PTX, HP Apollo, MacOS, Amiga
An excellent multiplayer-only Star Trek based arcade game. The game takes place in a galaxy divided into teams. Each team has a set number of planets, and each planet has a set number of armies. Using one of the 4 ships available you must destroy the opposing team’s armies and capture their planets. The game ends when all the planets on any one team are captured. This game is incredible in its sheer amount of gameplay. Netrek is one of the few truly great freeware games out there.

Nethack — Win9x, WinNTx, Win2K, DOS, Win3.x, Atari, Amiga, MacOS, OS/2, Linux
Nethack is the most popular of the Rogue-like genre of games. While its graphics may be nothing more than ASCII characters, Nethack has far more depth than most retail games. The object of the game is to capture the Amulet of Yendor which is hidden inside a massive dungeon. You must travel through each floor of the dungeon, each of which are randomly generated using an advanced map generator. Using a system based on Dungeons and Dragons, you must combat monsters using hundreds, if not thousands, of unique weapons, armor, spells, and items.

ADOM — Win9x, DOS, OS/2, Linux, Amiga
ADOM is a Rogue-like game that takes a more adventurous stance using an entirely different character, spell, monster and map infrastructure. If you liked Nethack make sure to get ADOM.

Dungeon Crawl — Win9x, DOS, OS/2, Amiga, MacOS, Linux
Also similar to Nethack is Dungeon Crawl, a Rogue-like game that takes a more action-oriented approach. Dungeon Crawl has a great character, monster and religious system that makes it a great supplement to Nethack.

Subspace — Win9x, NT4
Another popular multiplayer-only action game that puts you in charge of a ship of your choice, which you must upgrade and use to destroy the opposing players.

Elite and Elite Plus — DOS
A classic space combat game that, like Nethack, has poor graphics but a huge amount of depth and gameplay. Another must download.

LBreakout2 — Win9x, ME, NT4, Win2K, XP
The polished successor to LBreakout offers you a new challenge in more than 50 levels with loads of new bonuses (goldshower, joker, explosive balls, bonus magnet …), maluses (chaos, darkness, weak balls, malus magnet …) and special bricks (growing bricks, explosive bricks, regenerative bricks, indestructible bricks, chaotic bricks). And if you’re through with all the levels you can create complete new levelsets with the integrated easy-to-use level editor!

WZebra — Win9x, WinME, WinNT, Win2K, XP
Thanks to Ropera for the link. WZebra is a great Othello game that sports such features as an advanced AI that has adjustable difficulty levels, online play, and excellent help files.

Bridge Builder — Win9x, Win2K
Bridge Builder is a very unique game. It utilizes a simple concept and takes it to new heights in terms of gameplay. While it may sound like a second-rate freeware game, in reality it is very fun and addictive. A must download for all you strategy gamers out there.

FreeCiv — Linux, Solaris
An excellent Civilization 2 clone that is still under development, definitely an essential download for all you Linux users.
